Florida Powerboat Club makes image of the week on Speed on The Water, flashing it back to the Winter Poker Run.
Few places in the country are hospitable for boating of any kind in January. Even the desert oasis of Lake Havasu, with shorelines in Arizona and California—though most everything happens on the Arizona side—can be downright frosty this time of year.
The exception, of course, is South Florida and the Florida Keys. Sure, it can dip into the bitter 60s and even the 50s at night—sending natives of the Sunshine State into fits of despair and horror—but for the most part daytime temperatures are ideal for a day on the water. For example, the current temperature for Marathon, which happens to be the destination for the Florida Powerboat Club’s upcoming third annual Winter Poker Run to The Keys Jan. 27-29, is 81 degrees. And that temperature is predicted to drop to a bone-chilling 73 degrees this evening.
The only significant organized go-fast boating event in January, the FPC’s Winter Poker Run to the Hawks Cay Resort attracts participants who either can’t wait for February’s FPC Miami Boat Show Poker Run or want to do both. It’s far from the club’s biggest event, but it provides a welcome break—and in this case a welcome flashback escape—from real winter.
